The Winter Seasonal Detox

“Nothing will work unless you do”

When the world begins to turn cold and dark outside what choice do we have but to embrace to the quiet dormancy of winter and find our inner fortitude. Despite the fact that we are less active, we are still compelled to eat more and sleep more to keep our energy levels up.

If our work load and stress levels remain the same, winter can be a physically depleting time, so the aim of my winter detox is to replenish and rebuild our deeper reserves of energy.

The organ systems which correspond to the winter season are the kidneys, adrenal glands and bladder.

It is said in Traditional Chinese Medicine that the kidneys contain the Gate of Vitality and are the root of both Yin and Yang for the whole body.

The kidneys also govern the waters of the body, separating the pure from the impure. The flavor associated with the kidneys and the winter season is salty. They say water follows salt, so we can regulate the kidneys with salty or mineral-rich herbs and foods, like nettles or seaweed.

During the winter detox we will focus on flushing and restoring the waters of the body to help re-ignite the fire at the root – the kidneys and adrenals.

Sometimes we can get into a rut of running our system on the surface energy of caffeine and forcing our mind over matter to keep going. This false energy will leaving us depleted from stress and overwork.

Winter is a critical period of the year for protecting and regenerating our core energy, otherwise we will age our body faster than necessary.

We can’t really fight the power of winter and keep pushing ourselves without a cost. During this time of year nature is at rest and we should follow her example and slow down.

The winter detox centers around two plant formulas, the Energy Tonic and the Kidney Cleanse.

The Energy Tonic is designed to nourish both the yin and yang aspects of the kidneys and balance the body’s response to stress.

One of the feature ingredients of the formula is Rhodiola Rosea which is considered an ‘adaptogen’, a category of herbs which enables the body to handle stress more effectively, rebuilding energy and strengthening our immune response.

Rhodiola has a long history of use as a winter medicine and was prized by Chinese Emperors, Vikings and modern Russian athletes alike to enhance mental and physical performance.

Rhodiola is incredibly fortifying – it sharpens mental alertness, reduces fatigue, improves memory and is uplifting during depressive moods. It curbs sugar cravings and rebuilds a rundown system, while protecting the heart and brain from stress-related damage.

The Kidney Cleanse is a nourishing tea which acts as a gentle diuretic, helping to move lymphatic fluid and waste water out of our system so that the water element of the body can be renewed.

The featured herb of this tea is Stinging Nettle, which is rich in nutrients and minerals, particularly iron. When nettles are brewed at the right concentration it is powerfully energizing and enriching to the blood.

The winter detox is a chance to experience winter from a whole new perspective, rather than getting dragged deeper into a deficit of mental and physical energy, we can re-build what has been lost and feel better than ever.
